Birth and Childhood of Suparshvanath
Tirthankaras will have many previous births, and with the Tirthankar
Nam karma, they will live their life as a Tirthankara to attain Nirvana.
Present age Tirthankara Suparshvanath was born as King Nandisen of
Kshetrapuri in his previous incarnation. He was extremely piously
liberated, and because of his thorough penances and control, he came to
this world as an Arihant. Arihant means destroyer. Tirthankaras help
humanity to destroy the bad internal qualities and hence called as
Arihant. He got Diksha to come to this world as Tirthankara in his next
birth.
Suparshvanath’s soul descended into the womb of Queen Prithvi Devi of
Varanasi. The King of Varanasi Pratishthasen was facing many hardships
with his neighboring kingdoms. All were attacking the country and the
king Pratishthsen. He was fed up and went to pray to God. After praying
God for want of peace, he started reading the Jain philosophy. He was
reading about the evolution of Tirthankaras. He also studied about the
fourteen dreams, and at that time Queen Prithvi Devi came into his room.
She asked his permission to talk to him. They both started conversing,
and the king told about the book and the dreams. The Queen in a
rejoicing tone told the king that she dreamt of the fourteen things in
her dream in the early morning. King understood that she would give
birth to a Tirthankara. He happily told her that the dreams were the
sign of the birth of am Arihant. He also thanked her for making him a
proud father of a Tirthankara.
While they were talking the Senapati came and told the King that the
rivalry country Kings have called off war. They have shown interest in
unity. King became doubly happy upon hearing this.
Then the Queen Prithvi Devi on the twelfth day of Shukla Paksha
(waxing moon) of the month of Visakha gave birth to a boy baby. The
baby was born on Jyeshta star. Love, happiness, and richness flourished
everywhere. Now the king named the little boy as Suparshvanath. Parsh
means enemies. Suparsh means friends. Yes, due to the soul of the child
entered the mother’s womb the enemy kingdoms extended arms for
friendship. Hence the little boy was named as Suparshvanath. He grew up
as a polite, humble, and generous prince.
He got married to many wives per their custom. He always preferred
calm and pious life. One day the King decided to go to the Himalayas in
search of liberation for his soul. He made his son Suparshvanath the
king and left the kingdom. Suparshvanath efficiently executed the
responsibility as a king.
Suparshvanath – Ascetic Life
One evening he was sitting in his garden. He noticed the leaves
falling from the tree. He also saw the flowers drooping. He got a sense
of detachment witnessing at this. He glanced at once all his previous
births. He understood the purpose of the mundane existence. He now gave
the country to his son and gave away all the material possession. He
removed a fistful of his hair reciting “Namo Sidhanam” he vanished into
the crowd. He started practicing penance. One fine day he attained
Omniscience. On the sixth day of Krishna Paksham (Between the Full moon
and New moon) of the Phalgun month, he achieved Nirvana.
Nirvana
He began to preach Jainism to his followers. He gave them a way to
salvation. He educated them on the Right Act, Right Manner, and Right
Knowledge. Those are the core principles of Jain philosophy.
His dedication and love brought in thousands of individual to follow
his preaching. After consecutive nine months of his discourses on the
seventh day of the Sukla Paksham (the period between new moon and full
moon) also called as the bright half of the month or waxing moon of the
month of Phalguna he attained Nirvana at Sammed Shikar.
