Shree Vimal Nath
13th Jain Tirthankar
13th Jain Tirthankar
Tirthankara comes to the world as ordinary human being. They are not
God, but divine souls who destroy all their previous birth karma and get
liberated. They help people to cross the sea of worldly pain and
miseries. They elevate people to attain a blissful state. Tirthankaras
can also be called as Nirgranthas. Meaning of ‘Nir’ is ‘Without.’
‘Granth’ implies knot. Nirgrantha means without a knot. In simple words,
they are Siddhas who free themselves from the attachment of all earthly
pleasures. Without any ties in their life for money, peoples, or
emotions they quickly manage to achieve Nirvana. They help people to
realize the infinite birth and death cycle and preach them the ways to
attain Mukti.

The Jain cosmic calendar has a wheel with twelve Aras. The Utsarpini
kaal has six Aras and Avsarpini kaal has six Aras. Utsarpini means
progression. Everything in life will have positive growth namely the
wealth, health, ethics, and age. On the other hand, Avsarpini kaal
reverses everything from the best to the worst stage. Avsarpini means
regression or decline. People will have ill health, bad conduct, and
suffering state of mind.
The present age of Avsarpini fifth Ara has twenty Tirthankaras. Every
six Ara make one-half cycle. Set of 24 Tirthankaras are born during
every Ara. The Ara will move cyclically. Fifth Ara followed by Sixth and
then first Ara of Usaprini and so on.
Birth and Childhood of Vimalnath
Vimalnath was born as King Padmasen and ruled over the kingdom in
the town of Mahapuri. This town is located in Dhatikikhand. That was his
previous birth. At that time as a king, he was very humble and
straightforward. His subjects had peace during his reign. Finally, he
obtained Diksha from Acharya Yarsvargupt. He reached the highest state
of bliss and was born as a Tirthankara in his next birth.
His soul revived back in the Mahardhik aspect of Gods as a son of
Queen Shyama Devi. The Queen lived in Kampilpur with the King
Kritavarman. They both lived a happy married life with taking care of
all subjects. The Queen once had fourteen dreams that surprised her.
Later the King told her about the dream. In Digambar sect of Jainism,
there will be sixteen dreams. This dream indicates the birth of a
Tirthankara to them. The entire country was happy. All celebrated the
formation of a Tirthankara in their kingdom with joy.
The Queen all through her pregnancy expressed a cordial relationship
with all. She was very friendly and glowing. She showed sympathy of
living beings. She was meek and loved everyone. She gave birth to a boy
baby on the third day of the bright half of the month. The period of the
month between the New moon and the Full moon is called a bright half of
the month. Vimalnath was born in the month of Magh as followed by
Hindu calendar.
Upon witnessing purity and serenity across the kingdom, the king
named the child Vimal Kumar. Vimal means Pure or Untarnished. The child
was very compliant, affectionate and religious. He grew up as a prince.
He married a princess. He got married to many princesses per the wish of
their parents. Vimal was always obeying his elders. He then agreed to
become the king of Kampilpur. The King left the kingdom making Vimal as
the king. King embraced asceticism.
Vimalnath – Ascetic Life
Vimalnath was ruling the Kingdom efficiently for several years. He
had children. He lived peacefully. His people were all happy with him.
One day during his meditation he deeply had some thoughts about his
previous birth. He was able to see a picture of his past. He saw that he
was born as King Padmasen. He always loved peace. He practiced
spiritualism. He obtained Diksha and now born as a Tirthankara. After
seeing this, he could not resist himself dwelling in the material world.
He wanted to get detached. He gave away his wealth to all. He did not
want to live in the kingdom and coronate his son as the king. He left
the country to embrace asceticism. Many people followed his path of
renunciation from the material comforts.
Nirvana
He started talking to people about Jain philosophy. He insisted them
to getting detached from carnal pleasures. He told them the purpose of
their existence. He taught them how to get out of the life and death
Samudra.
He gave many discourses with love and compassion. He taught people
the value of ahimsa. He took them to the blissful state and helped them
giving salvation.
On the seventh day of the Krishna Paksham of the Ashad month, he
achieved Nirvana at hill top of Sammed Shikar. Krishna Paksham – Dark
half of the month. The fifteen days period between the Full moon and the
New moon is called as dark half of the month. Due to the fact that the
moon wanes during these fifteen days, Paksham means fortnight.
All his contemporaries including Bhadra Baldev, Merak Prativasudev,
and Svayambu Vasudev followed his preaching and attained Mukti.
