This is a
very popular and ancient prayer. It is often called the Logassa-Sutra
because it starts with the word logassa (lokasya = of the world). It is
often recited while visiting a temple or during periodic meditation. Logassa is named after the first phrase in this prakrit stotra Logassa Ujjoyagare (meaning: Illuminator (uplifter) of this world).
The language of the Sutra is Prakrit. The various dialects of Prakrit were spoken until about 6th century in northern India.
The
purpose of such a sutra is that one can remember the names and noble
conduct and character of twenty-four Jineshwaras who lived in this time
and in particular areas of our land and thereby one can gain pure truth.
The conduct of a non- attached person preaches non-attachment. In the
form of a self-realized soul, all twenty-four names of twenty-four
Tirthankaras as a group of infinite series of twenty-four Tirthankaras
who flourished in various spans of infinite time are included. By
remembering now the names of twenty-four Tirthankaras of our present
time, we remember fine knowledge of the condition of our times. Just as
we in our time remember the names of twenty-four Tirthankaras of our
time so did the devotees remember the names of twenty-four Tirthankaras
well known in their time in the past and this will be followed in future
too when with advance of time new series of twenty-four Thirhankaras
will flourish in future. Therefore it is not for certain that
twenty-four names of a particular group of twenty-four Thirthankaras
must be taken or remembered. But the essential lesson is that it will be
easy to remember the life and conduct of the series of Tirthankaras of
his time for the memory of their virtues and efforts made for
self-realization, One can only know by the name of a Tirthankara his
birth, his activities and his preaching. And by such remembrance our
soul shines out; as a serpent, awakens hearing the sound of a flute, so a
soul hearing its powers gets awakened from its slumber of worldly life.
Mental
illness and instability can be removed or controlled through the
process of meditation and relaxation. With this the will power
heightens. The chanting of Logass Sutra helps to awaken the
sub-conscious potentiality and serves to reach higher on the spiritual
level. It basically glorifies those who have illuminated the world by
preaching the sacred doctrine.
Here is the meaning:
Who have enlightened the world,
have established the dharma-thirtha,
I praise the Arihantas
the twenty four kevalis.
I worship Rushabha and Ajita,
Sambhava, Abhinanda and Sumati,
Padmaprabha, Suparshva,
I worship the Chandraprabha Jina.
Suvidhi or pushpadanta,
Shitala, Shreyansa and Vasapujya,
Vimala and Ananta Jina,
I worship Dharma and Shanti.
Kunthu, Ara and Malli,
I worship Muni-Suvrata and Nami Jina,
I worship Arishtanemi,
Parshva and Vardhman.
These who I praise,
without the dirt of Karma, beyond old age and death,
the 24 Jinas,
may Tirthankaras bless me.
Those who I praise and worship,
noble Siddhas in the world,
freedom from disease, possession of wisdoms
give me the noble blessing of Samadhi.
Cleaner than the moons
Brighter than the Suns,
deeper than ocean,
the Siddhas may bless me with Siddhi.
